frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is the Knights of Columbus?
The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic service organization dedicated to the four principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism. Known as "The Strong Right Arm of the Church," the Knights provide volunteer service to the local community and beyond, insurance for members, and a strong and lasting sense of brotherhood and friendship. The Order was founded by Father Michael J. McGivney in 1882. Membership is open to all Catholic Men in good standing. You can reach the main website for the Knights of Columbus by clicking here
I don't have time to join another organization; why should I join the Knights of Columbus?
As a Knight you can choose the projects with which you wish to be involved in within your own community. What is more, the Order is dedicated to family life and the many benefits it offers. From insurance to scholarships to service and social activities and programs, all are open to the whole family.
OK, that's all well and good, but what do the Knights actually do?
They do a variety of things, from running parish picnics to spending time with the infirm and poor to sponsoring basketball free-throws to raising money for a host of good causes.
Why should I join?
It's often said that one's duties in this world should be, in order of priority, to God, to your family, to your work, and to your self. The Knights are a dynamic and unique way to give back some of your time and talents to God, basically to thank Him for all of the gifts and blessings he has bestowed upon you. If you think of it like that, it's not a big deal after all. And you just might have some fun in the process!
What are the requirements?
Membership in the Knights of Columbus is open to men 18 years of age or older who are practical (that is, practicing) Catholics in union with the Holy See.
What is a practical Catholic?
A practical Catholic accepts the teaching authority of the Catholic Church on matters of faith and morals, aspires to live in accord with the precepts of the Catholic Church, and is in good standing in the Catholic Church.
Explain what Degrees are.
There are four degrees within the Knights of Columbus. Each degree ceremony imparts a lesson on the Order's core virtues of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism.
Do I have to purchase Insurance to become a member?
No; unlike many fraternal organizations one does not become a member by purchasing insurance. In the Knights of Columbus a man has to be a member before he may avail himself of the insurance benefit. Purchasing insurance is optional, however; the life insurance and long-term care insurance products offered by the Order are not only competitively priced, they are among the most solid and highly rated products available anywhere. Standard & Poor's and A.M. Best, the leading independent agencies that rate insurance companies, give K of C insurance their highest rating
